What to Wear for Your
Mommy & Me Session

Mommy & Me · Style Guide

"I have no idea what we should wear." I hear this from almost every mama before her session and honestly? That's completely normal. Figuring out outfits for two people that look beautiful together, feel comfortable, and photograph well is genuinely tricky. So let me take this off your plate entirely.

After photographing dozens of mommy & me sessions in the Seattle area from the golden autumn light of the Arboretum to the misty mountain meadows of the Snoqualmie Valley I've seen what works, what doesn't, and what makes a mama say "oh my gosh, that's my favorite photo ever" when she opens her gallery. This guide is everything I know, in one place, just for you.

Start with one anchor piece

The secret to a cohesive mommy & me look is not to match it's to coordinate around one anchor piece. Choose one beautiful outfit first (usually yours, mama!) and then build the rest of the looks around its colours and mood.

In the image above, the blush pink lace dress was the anchor. It set the whole tone soft, romantic, autumnal. Her daughter's dusty rose dress wasn't identical, but it lived in the same world. The result feels intentional and harmonious without looking like they're wearing costumes.

Monika's tip

"Choose your anchor outfit first, then take a photo of it in natural light and use that to shop for coordinating pieces. Colours look very different on a screen versus in the PNW's soft outdoor light."

Colours that photograph beautifully in the Pacific Northwest

The Seattle area has a very specific quality of light soft, diffused, often overcast, with incredibly rich greens and warm autumn tones depending on the season. Certain colours absolutely glow in this environment.

Notice what's missing from that list? Bright white, black, and neon tones. Pure white and pure black can create harsh contrast in photos and make your camera's sensor work overtime. That doesn't mean you can never wear them a cream or off-white, or a deep charcoal, can be absolutely stunning. But avoid stark, bright white, especially for outdoor sessions in full green settings.

Textures, layers, and the magic of movement

Flat, single-fabric outfits can read as a little one-dimensional in photos. What gives a portrait real depth and visual interest is texture and movement. Think lace, linen, chunky knit, velvet, chiffon, and broderie anglaise. These fabrics catch light differently across the frame and add a softness that's genuinely beautiful to photograph.

Look at that cosy knit sweater set in the images above — the pom-pom texture creates warmth and depth in the photo that a flat cotton top simply can't. And matching knitwear for mama and daughter? The sweetness is absolutely off the charts.

A note on hair accessories

I am a big believer in the power of a beautiful hair accessory. Bows, ribbons, lace clips, and floral crowns add a finishing touch that photographs exquisitely, especially for little girls. The matching lace bows in the session above tied the whole look together effortlessly — and they cost almost nothing to add.

Do

  • Choose soft, muted tones that complement each other

  • Layer textures — lace, linen, knit, velvet

  • Add a beautiful accessory: bows, ribbons, a flower crown

  • Wear something you feel genuinely beautiful in

  • Consider the season and location when choosing colours

  • Bring a second outfit option — just in case!

Avoid

  • Bright, stark white (opt for cream or ivory instead)

  • Large logos or busy graphic prints

  • Colours that clash with each other or the location

  • Outfits your child has never worn (risk of discomfort)

  • Shoes that are uncomfortable — you'll be moving around!

  • Over-matching: identical outfits can feel less natural

What about the little ones?

Here's the truth about dressing kids for photos: comfort is everything. A child who is uncomfortable, itchy, or restricted will show it in their body language, in their expressions, and in how much they want to cooperate. Choose outfits your little one has worn before and feels happy in. Save the brand-new stiff dress for a different occasion.

That said, little girls especially tend to love feeling "special" for photos. A beautiful dress, a favourite pair of boots, or a special hair bow can genuinely make them excited and engaged. Let them be part of choosing their outfit if they're old enough you might be surprised how much more willing they are to smile when they feel proud of what they're wearing.

From experience

"I always suggest bringing a small snack and a favourite toy or comfort item to sessions with little ones. A happy, unhurried child is the foundation of every beautiful photograph — and a granola bar at the right moment has saved more than one session."

When in doubt just ask me

Every session I offer includes a pre-session consultation, and one of my favourite parts of that conversation is helping you figure out what to wear. I know the locations we'll be shooting at, I know how the seasonal light will fall, and I genuinely love helping mamas feel prepared and excited rather than stressed.

Once you book your session, I'll send you a detailed style guide with even more specific recommendations based on your chosen location and time of year. You will never walk into your session wondering if you've made the right outfit choices I promise.
